Joseph Anthony Freeling, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 29, 2024, at the age of 68.
Joe was known for his unwavering generosity, big heart, and tireless work ethic. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his zest for life. Whether it was hunting, fishing, or spending summers at the Outer Banks or in Florida with his family, Joe found peace and joy in the simple pleasures of nature. He had a special way of making everyone feel at home—always ready to lend a hand, fix a broken lawn mower, or offer a kind word when someone needed it most. No task was too big or too small, and he took pride in being the go-to “Mr. Fix-It” for neighbors and friends alike.
Joe’s big heart extended far beyond his family. He would often joke that he was “the cat’s meow” and, in many ways, he was. He didn’t hesitate to embarrass himself for the sake of making others laugh, whether that was pulling off his famous “Uncle Joe” flop into the pool or doing something outrageous on the dance floor just to see someone smile. His humor was contagious, and his willingness to help others, even at his own expense, was a testament to his character. He would truly take the shirt off his back to make someone else’s day better.
Joe was a lifelong resident of Bensalem and during the week a hardworking employee of Conrail Railroad for 42 years. Sundays were sacred to Joe. They were dedicated to family, friends and the Philadelphia Eagles. He made Sunday breakfast, kicked back on the couch with a crossword puzzle, and spent the day watching the game with a beer in hand, rooting for his team with the passion of a true fan. He always said he should’ve been an actor or a songwriter, but his greatest roles were those he played in the lives of his loved ones.
A proud Parrot Head for life, Joe was an avid fan of Jimmy Buffett, and nothing made him happier than listening to his favorite tunes with family and friends by his side. His love for the carefree spirit of Buffett’s music was a reflection of his own approach to life—a man who lived fully and with a smile, no matter the circumstances.
Joe was a man who loved with abandon, lived with humor, and gave of himself without hesitation. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years Colleen, his children Colleen, Kelly (Jason) and Justin, his grandchildren, Taylor, Camryn, Dominic, Joseph III, Giovanni, Kendyl, Chase, and Carter, his siblings George and Margaret along a large extended family of in-laws and nieces/nephews who all felt fortunate to know him. He is preceded in death by his son Joseph Jr., grandson Cade, and siblings Alice Kate, Robert, and Susan. Though we will miss him dearly, we take comfort in knowing that he is now dancing in heaven, keeping a watchful eye over us, and undoubtedly sharing a laugh with his loved ones playing his beloved Jimmy Buffett music.
In honor of Joe’s memory, we ask that you smile a little wider, help a little more, and cherish every moment, just as he did.
Rest in peace, Joe. You were the best of us, and you will forever be in our hearts.
