Burial Date December 3, 2022

John Wallace Absalom, age 67, died Monday, November 28, after a brief illness. Mr. Absalom was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John S. Absalom and Pearl Dye. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Margaret Cusack Absalom, Catherine and Scott Wilson, Elizabeth and Lee Isaacson, Thomas Cusack and Carrie Ohly Cusack, Dennis Cusack and Louise Francis, Mary Cusack, and Michael and Lucy Cusack, and eleven nephews, four nieces, and 4 great-nieces.
John made his New York City Opera debut as Pollione in Bellini’s Norma in 1985. He was later pronounced to be one of the City Opera’s more valuable acquisitions, singing roles such as Don Jose in Carmen, Canio in Pagliacci, Paul in Die tote Stadt, and touring with the company to Wolf Trap, Saratoga Springs, and Taipei, Taiwan. In addition to opera performances with companies around the country, he also soloed extensively in the USA and Canada, singing with the symphony orchestras of Cleveland, Toronto, Seattle, St. Louis, and Detroit.
After retiring from singing, John worked briefly for the Sylvan Opera Company. He devoted a good deal of his time to his recording collection and delighted in sharing his finds with other enthusiasts.
